Legend has it that Sam Houston stopped overnight in the village en route to Texas and gained many admirers. Thus, the town was named for the founder of the new state of Texas. June 1846 is Houston's official birthday.

Houston was the hometown of Emmett Kelly Sr., the famous clown known as "Weary Willie." Born in Sedan, KS, on December 9, 1898, he moved with his family to a farm east of Houston. The rags to riches career of Kelly started in Houston where Emmett got his first professional assignment at the Old Settler's Reunion. He gained the title of "the World's Greatest Clown" from Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey. He never forgot his hometown and gave his fellow townspeople credit for his start in show business. His last visit to Houston was in 1975 when a roadside park was dedicated to him. He died suddenly 2 years later in his home in Sarasota, FL.

Much of our largely rural 755,000-acre county is devoted to agriculture - primarily related to livestock production. Texas County has more beef cows than any other county in the state with 45,000 head, and is ranked 2nd in all cattle and calves with 98,500 head. The county is home to 7,400 head of dairy cattle and approximately 150 dairy operations - 6th in the state.

There are over 1,500 farms in Texas County, and the vast majority of operations are family farms. Few row crops are raised, but a great deal of forage is harvested as hay and silage. The average size of a farm here is just less than 300 acres, but over 450,000 acres are devoted to farming. Texas County's livestock agriculture combined with our quaint towns, beautiful timber and natural rivers makes it one of the most rustically beautiful counties in the state.
